This course requires an enrollment keyThe course is the fourth, of a four-year program designed to provide non-native signers an opportunity to study American Sign Language (ASL) as a foreign/second language. Ohio state law, HB216, recognizes ASL as a foreign language and as fulfillment of a high school foreign language graduation requirement . Students will cover materials from the last half of Signing Naturally-Level 3 text and videos. Additional history and cultural information will be introduced.
Students will build on their narrative skills, moving from an informal to a more formal presentation. Students will develop the language skills needed to explain ideas or concepts and to develop skills to translate written text into ASL. Voicing skills of video signers’ narratives will also be learned. Students will learn storytelling of fairy tales and children’s stories, give presentations on health-related topics, increase vocabulary and fluency in everyday conversational skills.
